What it can do
- Add text anywhere, in Helvetica, Times or Courier, any size and colour, bold or regular. Drag to move; double-click to change it.
- Sign by drawing with your finger or mouse, or upload a photo of your signature on paper (the paper is made transparent automatically).
- Tick, cross and today's date for forms that ask you to mark boxes and date them.
- Fill form fields if the PDF has them (text boxes, checkboxes, drop-downs). They stay fillable unless you choose to flatten them.
- White out a mistake, highlight a passage, insert an image such as a stamp or photo.
- Rotate, reorder and delete pages.
- Undo and redo every step, then download with no watermark.
What "redact" means here
Drawing a black box over text in most editors only covers it: the text is still in the file, and anyone can copy it out. PixKB's redaction is real. When you download, every page with a redaction box is rebuilt from a picture of the page with the boxes burned in, and the file is rewritten so the old page content isn't kept anywhere inside it. The document's title and author details are cleared too.
We tested this the strict way: a test letter containing an account number was redacted, then we searched every byte of the downloaded file, including compressed content and metadata, for that number. It wasn't there. The trade-off is that text on a redacted page can no longer be selected or searched. Pages without redactions keep their text. If the file has form fields, they're flattened when you redact, so no hidden field value survives either.
What it can't do (yet)
- Change existing text in place. PDF text isn't stored as editable paragraphs, so no browser tool can reliably reflow it. The honest method: white out the old words, then add text on top. The result looks clean when the font is similar.
- Write non-Latin scripts such as Urdu, Arabic or Hindi. The built-in fonts cover English and Western European letters; you'll get a clear message if you type something they can't write.
- Open password-protected PDFs. Open it with its password in your PDF reader, save an unprotected copy, and edit that.
After editing
Need it under an upload limit? Run the result through Compress PDF, which keeps your added text and signature sharp. Need to attach other documents? Merge PDF combines them into one file.
Acceptable use
This editor is for your own documents: filling and signing forms, correcting your own files, marking up, and redacting before you share. Don't use it to alter documents in order to deceive anyone, including bank statements, certificates, IDs, receipts, or academic or medical records. Doing so can be a crime, and it's against our terms.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark and no daily limit. The site is free to use; the editing runs on your own device.
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF?
Not in place: PDF text isn't stored as editable paragraphs. Use Whiteout to cover the old words, then Add text on top. It looks clean when you match the font and size.
Is redaction permanent?
Yes. Pages with redactions are rebuilt from an image with the boxes burned in, and the old page content isn't kept in the file. Text on those pages can no longer be selected.
Can I sign a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Choose Sign, draw with your finger, then tap the page where the signature should go. You can drag and resize it afterwards.
Will form fields still work after I fill them?
Yes. They stay fillable unless you tick “Flatten fields when downloading” or add a redaction (which flattens them so no hidden value survives).
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It's opened and saved inside your browser. You can check in your browser's network tab, or use the editor in airplane mode after saving it for offline use.
